The cat flea is around 2mm long, a reddish brown colour and flattened laterally which allows it to move easily amongst the hair of its host. They have very distinct large jumping legs and a row of non-sensory black spines on the front margin of the head.

A female flea will lay hundreds of eggs at a time, from the egg emerges larva which are white in colour, these feed on the organic debris found in the bed of the host. When the larva is mature it spins a cocoon of silk which allows the pupa to develop into an adult flea. When triggered by a stimulus such as vibration the adult flea will emerge to feed on the host.

Fleas enjoy warm temperatures and are most interested in the parts of the home which aren't clean.

Fleas can cause distress from the bites which depending on the number of fleas on the host can become considerable. They can also be a carrier of tapeworm which can be passed onto the host and they can cause serious digestive tract disease which if not treated can be fatal.
